Daughter born to Benruds

Roger and Michelle Benrud of Goodhue announce the birth of their daughter, Clara Evelyn, on Aug. 9, 2013, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Lake City. Clara weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces, and was 22-1/2 inches long. Her older siblings are Emily, 13, and Calvin, 8. Grandparents are Nathlye Benrud of Goodhue and Bob and Jan Kreie of Brownton. Great-grandparents are Irma Kreie of Hutchinson and Floyd and Una Walters of Litchfield.


Pioneerland Library asks for more county funding

The Pioneerland Library System is seeking $193,138 in funding from McLeod County for 2014, a 3 percent increase, or $5,625, over 2013. According to statistics provided to the County Board, the library system has not had an increase in four years.
Jackee Fountain, head librarian for Glencoe and Brownton, and Pam Dille, head librarian for Hutchinson and Winsted, appeared before the County Board Tuesday to review library activities and make the funding request.

City to televise, clean some of its sanitary sewers

In an effort to find major trouble spots, Glencoe City Council on Monday night approved the spending of about $23,000 to televise and clean out city sanitary sewers.
Gary Schreifels, city public works director for water and wastewater, said this is a direct result of the June 23 “rain event.”
He said with rains like that — 4.3 inches in 90 minutes — flows at the wastewater treatment plant jump in a matter of minutes.
But the meters at the treatment plant did not pick up flows from some manholes, and that may be an indication of a blockage in the lines.

New public defender knows what he is in for

It is a wonder any attorney would wade into the public defenders’ realm with the part-time pay, large caseloads and added stress, but Scott Nokes, 49, of the Glencoe Law Office did just that on June 19, when he was named a public defender in McLeod County District Court.
He replaces Michelle Barley, a long-time McLeod County public defender, who was promoted to managing attorney for the western half of the large First Judicial District that stretches from Glencoe east to Hastings. She is now based in Chaska.

‘No Time to Quit’ is author’s first book

New author Gail Lipe of Chaska is no stranger to writing, or the area. Lipe, who just published her first book, “No Time to Quit: Life in a Broken Package,” is a former staff writer with The McLeod County Chronicle.
Her 144-page book is about her mother, Gail Johnson, who was born with cerebral palsy and was not expected to survive.
But now 81, Johnson has defied all odds, comfounded medical experts and overcame obstacles as she blazed a trail for many handicapped persons who followed.
Johnson is a leader, an advocate and an inspiration, Lipe said of her mother.

Piano donation to City Center

Twyla Kirkeby, seated, presented a baby grand piano to the Glencoe City Center recently. The piano will replace one that was donated to the City Center when it first opened. Honoring Kirkeby for her donation were members of Glencoe City Council, from left, Kevin Dietz, Mayor Randy Wilson, Kirkeby, Gary Ziemer, Dan Perschau and John Schrupp. Missing was council member Lori Adamietz.

County Fair time

The McLeod County Fair was held last week at the fairgrounds in Hutchinson. As with each year at the fair, the celebration consists of moto cross shows, live bands, great food, exhibits and booths, and, of course, a series of animal shows, including the 4-H Swine Show and 4-H Lamb Lead that were held last Thursday afternoon. Creekside concept plan runs into roadblocks

The Glencoe Planning and Industrial Commission Monday afternoon received a brief update of the concept proposal to turn the Creekside subdivision near Miller Manufacturing into an affordable housing subdivision.
City Administrator Mark Larson said initial research, however, indicated that the tax increment financing (TIF) request by Hutchinson developer Gus Wurdell may not be available for this project, because Wurdell is not the initial developer of the subdivision.

Great-grandparents are Jean and Martin Hirdler of Crystal, Rosella Fahey of Belle Plaine and Audrey Cronick of Chanhassen.

Mike and Cara Tschida announce the birth of their son, Lukas Michael, on Aug. 25, 2013, at Clovis Community Center Hospital in Clovis, Calif. Lukas weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces, and was 20 inches in length. His older brother is Ryan, 2. Grandparents are Paul and Lila Tschida of Glencoe, and Loree and Mike Sterling and Dan and Denise Littleton of Visalia, Calif. Great-grandparents are Lloyd and Audrey Lipke of Glencoe. Lukas is the Lipkes’ seventh great-grandson. They also have one great-granddaughter.

Proposed courthouse expansion plans topic of Sept. 17 meeting

A proposed expansion of the McLeod County Courthouse in Glencoe includes 20 new beds in the jail, a new lobby and a secure hallway to one of the courtrooms.
Those items — as well as several security improvements — are expected to cost about $7 million.
The County Board has invited Wold Architects and Engineers to its Sept. 17 meeting to present the proposed project to the board and to the public.
Last week, McLeod County Sheriff Scott Rehmann said the proposed improvements grew out of discussions that began in 2012 “about how to increase security and safety in the courthouse.”

Transit, other officials gather to discuss ways to cooperate

A large group of city, county and public transit officials from several counties came together in Hutchinson Friday morning to talk about how different transit systems can cooperate — and possibly consolidate — to provide better service to riders.
Beverly Herfindahl of District 8 of the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), said the talk of making public transit systems more efficient started in 2011 when, because of a large deficit at the state level, “we thought transit could take a 30 percent cut in funding.”

'Murder & Mayhem.' Sheriff co-authors booklets detailing county murders from 1800s to 1950s

McLeod County Sheriff Scott Rehmann helped compile two booklets for the McLeod County Historical Society outlining the murders that occurred in McLeod County over its history. The first booklet, “The Midnight Gavel of Judge Lynch,” which he worked on with Barb Reiger, outlines the 1896 murder of Sheriff Joseph Rogers. The second booklet, “Murder & Mayhem in McLeod County,” which he wrote with his wife, Katie, with help from Tony Kadlec, Alyssa Schauer and Brittany Koch, details 19 murders that occurred in the county from the 1800s through the 1950s.

At 101, Elda continues to reap blue ribbons

Elda Huepenbecker, who turned 101 in April, captured seven more ribbons, including a purple ribbon, at the McLeod County Fair earlier this month. A resident of the long-term care facility at Glencoe Regional Health Services, Huepenbecker posed with the purple ribbon for her crocheting as well as six blue ribbons for her crocheted towels (on the shelf). Her awards, along with others earned by fellow long-term care residents, are on display at the facility’s main lobby. For the complete article, see this week's Chronicle.
